A Joyful Surprise Proposal at Hermann Park’s Japanese Garden | Chase & Grace
As a wedding photographer, there are few moments more special than capturing a surprise proposal, and Chase’s proposal to Grace was one I’ll never forget. Thoughtfully planned, full of emotion, and set against the serene beauty of Hermann Park’s Japanese Garden in Houston, this proposal had all the magic.
Chase first reached out to me months ago, eager to plan the perfect proposal for his girlfriend, Grace. He had already picked out a gorgeous engagement ring, one he knew she had her eye on, and decided that the Japanese Garden at Hermann Park was the perfect location to pop the question.
On a warm Saturday evening in June, I arrived early to scout the garden. I checked out the plants in bloom, watched how the light was falling, and made sure everything was in place for the big moment. Soon after, Grace’s sister arrived and greeted me. She let me know the cover story: Chase had told Grace they were headed to Hermann Park to celebrate her sister’s birthday. Grace had no idea what was about to happen.
Chase had picked a peaceful, sunny spot near the water, and everything was perfectly calm until a nutria (a Texas-sized water rat) started waddling its way right toward the proposal site. Then a small crowd gathered in the exact spot where Chase planned to propose. I quietly let everyone know a proposal was moments away, and thankfully, everyone was incredibly kind and cleared the space just in time.
Soon, Chase and Grace arrived. He led her to a sun-drenched bench by the water, took a deep breath, and got down on one knee. Grace’s face lit up with shock and joy as Chase asked her to marry him. Of course, she said yes.
After their sweet embrace and some joyful kisses, we wandered through the gardens capturing some stunning engagement photos. Despite the summer heat, these two looked incredible together, glowing with happiness and completely in love. The lush greenery, winding paths, and tranquil water features of the Japanese Garden made the perfect romantic backdrop for their post-proposal portraits.
Chase’s careful planning, the emotional moment, and the love between these two made this proposal one for the books. I’m so honored I got to capture it all.
