Reasons to love Houston: #1

 In Uncategorized

I am considering starting posts on why I love Houston.  My first entry is a recent thing I love about Houston- LOIS.  Lois is a Amorphophallus titanum plant over six feet tall, which was recently located at the Houston Museum of Natural Science during its first bloom.  The plant is referred to as titan arum or the corpse flower, has gained its celebrity status by having one of the largest, rarest, and smelliest flowers in the world.” The flower recently bloomed after existing only as a seed the size of a walnut seven years ago.

I’ve attached some pictures below from when I went to visit the plant at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.  I believe the flower is back in the greenhouse now.

What I find the most shocking about this plant is how many people were interested in it.  Apparently, when the plant was first discovered long ago it was believed to be a human eating plant due to its great size (Random facts, I know).

You can also enjoy the butterfly exhibit at the Houston Museum of Natural Science.  Thanks and I’ll be back with more reasons to love Houston by JP.  <3
